Before she was a famous author Margaret Mahy was a librarian. Her first professional post in 1958 was at the Petone Library where she was the assistant librarian. At this time the library was located in the Petone Borough Council building on Jackson Street. Mahy left in 1960 for a job at the Christchurch Public Library. She held various library positions in Christchurch before becoming a full-time writer in 1980.
